About the stray cat in the studio
In high school, I had the privilege of learning ceramics and stained glass under my art teacher, Clay Walthall, who encouraged me to pursue a future in art. With his guidance, I was accepted into James Madison University, where I studied under Sukjin Choi and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in ceramics. After graduation, limited studio access led me to explore polymer clay, creating jewelry and sculptures in my apartment while my husband cheered me on to sell my work.
In 2024, I found my way back to ceramic clay with the opening of Friendly City Clay and Art Center. Volunteering there eventually led to a studio assistant position, where the encouragement of Ros, the center’s owner, reignited my dream of pursuing art professionally.
Today, my primary medium is ceramics, where I explore the possibilities of underglaze, texture, and layered glazes. While I enjoy both wheel throwing and hand building, the latter has become the heart of my recent work. Stained glass remains my second love, and I look forward to delving deeper into its vibrant possibilities.
Nature, fashion, and trends inspire my designs, which often feature playful silhouettes, bold underglaze stripes, and intricate details. My goal is to evoke joy, obsession, and connection in those who experience my work. Known for my distinctive style and daring use of color, I strive to create dark, whimsical art that resonates with a wide audience.
The name "Stray Cat Studios" reflects my personality—independent, observant, and a little standoffish, with a protective and caring side that emerges when trust is earned. My studio is a lively space shared with three beloved cats, a loyal black lab, and a stray cat taking refuge during the winter. Together, we create in a setting infused with personality and love.
As an artist, I aspire to make this passion my full-time pursuit, with sculptures displayed in gallery exhibitions and opportunities to teach others the joy of creating. Through my work, I aim to challenge convention and inspire appreciation for the beautiful and unconventional.
